ROCHESTER - Snowy roads are likely to blame for a two-car crash on Wednesday afternoon that resulted in serious injury to a child.
The collision occurred around 4:30 on 202/Washington Street in the area of Blue Hills Drive near the Barrington town line at the height of an intense snowstorm that caused near whiteout conditions in and around Rochester.
Upon arrival two heavily damaged vehicles - a 2004 Toyota Matrix and a 2007 Chevy Malibu – were found in the roadway near the shoulder with one person lying on the ground.
The juvenile passenger of the Malibu was transported by Frisbie EMS with serious injuries while the driver was transported for non-life threatening injuries. The girl was later transferred to Maine Medical in Portland.
The driver of the Matrix was not transported. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
The Strafford County Regional Accident Reconstruction Team was called out to investigate the accident. Washington Street/202 was closed for approximately five hours between Green Hill Road in Barrington and Dry Hill Road in Rochester.
Weather related road conditions appear to be a factor, however the accident is still under investigation at this time, police said.
Police have not revealed the age or hometown of the girl injured or the driver of the Malibu.
