Wrong-way driver nabbed on DWI, drug charges

BEDFORD - A Bay State man driving the wrong was on both Interstate 93 and the Everett Turnpike on Friday was arrested on DWI and drug possession charges when State Troopers finally caught up with him.

The race to pull him over before someone was killed unfolded around 1:30 a.m. when State Police received reports of a silver sedan traveling the wrong way on I-293 in Manchester. The initial report indicated that a vehicle had entered I-293 from the Granite Street exit traveling southbound in the northbound lanes.

The wrong-way vehicle managed to continue south onto the Everett Turnpike in Bedford, still traveling the wrong direction, State Police said in a statement.

Troopers were finally able to stop the vehicle in the area of mile marker 19.

The driver was identified as Nikhl Israni, 22, of Lowell. He was charged with reckless conduct, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, and possession and transportation of drugs.
