DOVER - Wentworth-Douglass Hospital has received a 2024 "Get with the Guidelines" quality achievement award from the American Heart Association, for excellence in treating stroke. The honor was given with "Gold Plus" distinction - the highest level of the award given by the organization.

The award recognizes Wentworth-Douglass' commitment to the association's in-hospital program that ensures patient care is aligned with the latest research and evidence-based guidelines, according to a statement released on Thursday.

"This award highlights the exceptional commitment and relentless dedication of our team, who strive not only to meet, but to exceed national guidelines in providing outstanding care for our stroke patients," said Darin Roark, president and chief operating officer.

Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death, and a leading cause of disability, in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, and brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability, and accelerating recovery times.

"We are incredibly pleased to recognize Wentworth-Douglass for its commitment to caring for patients with stroke," said Dr. Steven Messe, volunteer chairperson of the American Heart Association Stroke System of Care Advisory Group and professor of neurology and director of fellowships of neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. "Participation in 'Get With The Guidelines' is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates - a win for health care systems, families, and communities."
