CONCORD - The adult male involved in Friday's officer-involved shooting in Manchester has been identified as a 56-year-old Manchester man.

Andrew E. Smith was shot in the area of Bridge and Ash Streets around 9:30 a.m. after an officer on patrol approached Smith to speak with him, according to a statement from the Attorney Generals Office.

The male informed the officer that he was armed with a gun, and the officer instructed him to keep his hands visible, however, the male reached into his pocket for the firearm. A struggle ensued, during which the male fired what was later determined to be a pistol and the officer returned fire. Smith was struck by the gunfire and later died at a local hospital.

The officer involved in this incident was wearing a body-worn camera, which recorded the event. That footage is currently being preserved and will be reviewed. The officer was not physically injured.

An autopsy of Smith's body on Saturday determined that the cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, and the manner of death was homicide. As used by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, homicide is defined as the killing of one person by another.

The investigation by the New Hampshire Department of Justice with the assistance of the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit is ongoing. The identity of the officer using deadly force will not be disclosed until formal interviews take place; this is expected to take place in the next five to 10 business days. The exact circumstances surrounding this incident remain actively under investigation.
