SANFORD, Maine — The Sanford man charged with brutally beating his eight-week-old infant twins was arraigned by video on Wednesday at Springvale District Court.
Anthony Carpinelli, 21, who remains at the York County Jail, had his bail set at $25,000 cash.
Meanwhile, the twins, a boy and a girl, are doing better and have both been released from the hospital to the care of their mother.
Carpinelli caused the twins to suffer serious head trauma on May 1, when the twins were exclusively in his care, police say.
They were transported to Southern Maine Health Care in Sanford and later taken to Barbara Bush Children's Hospital at Maine Medical Center in Portland, one with serious injuries, the other, the girl, with critical injuries.
According to police, when the mother returned the night of the alleged assault, she found the infants in distress and took them to the hospital. Authorities said the injuries are consistent with being struck and shaken, according to The Associated Press.
Carpinelli was arrested on May 5. He stands accused of aggravated felony assault, punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
