ROCHESTER - Rochester Police Officers helped to deliver a baby deer on Friday after its mother was struck by a vehicle on Gonic Road.
As a result of the accident the mother gave birth to two fawns, one of whom died as did the mother deer, too.
Officers later contacted New Hampshire Fish and Game, who directed them to a licensed rehabilitator to care for the surviving fawn.
The tale of triumph after tragedy can be seen on the Rochester Police Facebook page, where the post had more than 130 shares as of today.
Police took the opportunity to let the public know only qualified people with special rehabilitator permits, issued through NH Fish and Game, may take in and care for injured or orphaned wildlife.
Improper care of injured or orphaned wildlife often leads to their sickness or death. Unless you have rehabilitator credentials, it is illegal to have in your possession or take New Hampshire wildlife from the wild and keep it in captivity. For a full list of licensed wildlife rehabilitators, go to https://wildlife.state.nh.us/wildlife/rehabilitators.html
