ROCHESTER - In the wake of six DUI arrests in just four days Rochester Police are urging motorists to avoid driving impaired this holiday season by making sure they make arrangements to have a sober driver to take them home.
"And if If you're the designated driver, it's important to take the role seriously and don't consume alcohol," Rochester Police Capt. Todd Pinkham said on Wednesday.
Pinkham said Rochester Police know full well there is increased drinking during the holidays and use data-driven techniques to patrol certain areas of the city based on DUI incidents.
"we are mindful of impaired driving during the holiday season," he said, "and we do look at certain past data regarding DUIs this time of year in an attempt to target certain areas in the city for traffic enforcement."
Rochester Police made single DUI arrests on Thursday and Friday, and two more on both Saturday and Sunday. Two arrests over the weekend also included charges of open container.
Besides losing your license for a significant amount of time offenders can expect a typical DUI will cost them a little over, $4,000 in New Hampshire and about $3,400 in Maine.
Pinkham acknowledged that DUIs aren't the only driving hazard during the holidays; increased traffic, weather worries including slick roads and road rage can all spoil a beautiful season.
Rochester Police offer these tips to ensure your season stays happy and tranquil.
Seasonal safety tips
The number one rule with any travel is to not drink and drive or drive impaired by any type of medication and/or drug.
If you're celebrating and drinking this holiday season, always remember to plan ahead with a sober driver to take you home. If you're the designated driver, it's important to take the role seriously and don't consume alcohol. Here are some more safety tips:
• Never drink and drive.
• Don't let someone get behind the wheel if that person has been drinking.
• If you're hosting a gathering, make sure everyone has a sober ride home.
• Always wear your seat belt. It's your best defense against impaired drivers.
• Plan your travel route and departure time ahead of time. Try to avoid traveling during peak travel hours and give yourself plenty of time.
• Avoid engaging in any type of "road rage" type incident. With frustrations possibly resulting from increased traffic, crowded shopping or weather-related road conditions, remember to stay calm behind the wheel and follow/obey all traffic laws.
• If someone is not pleased with your driving, whether or not it is really their fault, do not engage in any verbal or physical confrontation with them. Allow them to pass or merge, don't tailgate them, and give yourself plenty of space. If they choose to engage you in anyway, pullover and call the Police. Don't risk putting yourself or anyone else in danger.
