CONCORD - Starting today New Hampshire residents can possess up to three quarters of an ounce of marijuana without the fear of being criminally prosecuted.
House Bill 640, which was signed into law by Gov. Chris Sununu in July, does away with the misdemeanor-level crime for such amounts and replaces it with a potential fine of up to $300.
The new law means you can't get arrested for possessing small amounts, but would instead get a citation and a fine.
More than 20 states across the nation, including all of New England, have now reduced criminal penalties on cannabis.
Maine made recreational use of pot legal last year, however many details laid out in the new law have yet to be worked out.
Vermont and Rhode Island are likely to make recreational use legal next year, analysts say.
