ROCHESTER - The man who was arrested for DWI after allegedly stealing money from the Washington Street Shell was in court for a Tuesday arraignment at which prosecutors said he actually crashed after taking a $50 heroin fix using the money he'd stolen.

Daniel Wilson, 27, a transient, was arraigned on the charges of theft by unauthorized taking, DWI and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

Prosecutors said it is thought Wilson took just $50 from the safe of the Shell safe as the attendant became distracted with a long line of customers.

From the initial investigation officers were able to identify a potential suspect.

Just a few minutes later, around 2:45, Rochester Police, Fire and EMS responded to Charles Street for a report of a motor vehicle accident in which Wilson drove a Ford Focus into a parked car.

A Strafford County prosecutor said Wilson took the $50 and bought heroin, which led to the crash.

Wilson has a long history with law enforcement, including disorderly conduct, a pair of shoplifting arrests, Class A misdemeanor shoplifting, OAS, Class A misdemeanor theft, receiving stolen property.

Wilson wanted to negotiate a plea deal during arraignment but was told that was not an option by the court. He was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail pending his probable cause hearing.
