ROCHESTER - A school threat that originated out of state but was distributed through social media to several Rochester students describing a school shooting that was to occur today was deemed not credible after an investigation by city police.
Rochester Police were alerted to the relevant social media posts on Friday. The message had been sent to and then forwarded by several Rochester students.
After a brief investigation Rochester Police learned the message originated in Apex, N.C., and was being investigated there, where it had been discovered on a bathroom wall at Apex Friendship High School.
North Carolina safety officials said the threat is a hoax, and there is no belief that the information poses a danger to schools here.
It appears a picture of the message from the wall of that school was distributed via Snapchat and social media to students in Rochester, Rochester Police say.
Rochester Police took the opportunity to remind citizens and parents they take all school threats seriously and will increase security as a precaution today.
Rochester School officials were not immediately available for comment.
