Prisoner indicted in beating death of fellow inmate at Berlin facility

BERLIN - A New Hampshire prisoner housed at the Berlin Correctional facility has been indicted in the death of another inmate in February.

James Dale, 65, was struck with a metal pipe on February 13,.leading to his death.

An autopsy determined Dale died from blunt impact to the head.

Robert Lavoie, 57, is accused of killing Dale by striking Dale with a metal pipe.

Dale was convicted in 1997 of raping and killing a 6-year-old girl.

Lavoie remains in custody. An arraignment has been scheduled for Jan.3 at Coos Superior Court.

The charges against Lavoie are merely accusations, and he is presumed innocent unless and until proved guilty.
