For almost 50 years Poor People's Pub has been a food and drink destination for folks traveling up Route 16 to the White Mountains as well as folks that live just down the street.
And their mantra hasn't changed either: "Nothing fancy, just good grub."
Same with their service; it's friendly, efficient, but not obsequious, which I detest.
We went on Tuesday and found a good-sized, socially distancing lunchtime crowd.
I got a Scrooge's Snack ($4.99), which is a grilled cheese and comes with chips, but no pickle. For an extra buck, I added bacon. Now where have you seen add bacon for a buck in 2020?
My gluten-free sandwich was beautifully grilled a golden brown, but the American cheese it came with tasted a bit processed. The bacon was excellent and aplenty.
Meanwhile, Martha got the Hobo Special ($8.99), which is lean corned beef, swiss cheese and sauerkraut on grilled rye.
The corned beef and cheese was fine, she said, but the sauerkraut was a little tired, and there wasn't enough of it to complement the other ingredients.
The food came out fast, in about five minutes and as I said the luncheon tab was painless. And there's something to be said for that!
