DERRY - A probe into an officer-involved shooting during a traffic stop in Derry reveals that the motorist wounded in the shooting failed to stop for the officer as ordered, which led to the gunfire, according to the Attorney Generals Office.
The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. Friday on the Route 28 Bypass when Derry Police Officers attempted to make a traffic stop of a car being operated by Levi Coltey, 26. Police say Coltey refused to bring his car to a stop, and during the encounter one officer used "deadly force and fired on the vehicle," according to a statement sent out Saturday by the AG's Office.
Coltey. who was struck, was taken to a local hospital where he remains hospitalized with what are described as nonlife threatening injuries.
Coltey was charged with various but undisclosed offenses by the Derry Police Department.
The investigation by the New Hampshire Department of Justice and the New Hampshire State Police Major Crimes Unit into the officer-involved shooting Coltey is ongoing, and the identity of the officer using deadly-force will not be disclosed until a formal interview takes place. This is expected to occur sometime next week.
