Man charged in burglary surrenders after Dover standoff

DOVER - A Greenland man surrendered to police after an hours-long standoff at a Dover apartment complex early Thursday.

Police first responded to an Addison Place address around 2:15 a.m. for a reported burglary at an apartment complex there.

The resident reported that a rifle and cellular phone had been stolen, and police were able to quickly track the phone to another nearby apartment on Pleasant View Circle. Officers soon determined that somebody was inside a vacant apartment and refused to come out.

The Strafford County Regional Tactical Operations Unit responded and after hours of negotiation, convinced the person to surrender.

Taken into custody around noon was Richard J. Nelson Jr., of 256 Great Bay Road. Nelson refused bail and is scheduled to be arraigned in Strafford County Superior Court on Monday.

Nelson, 35, was charged with five counts of felony burglary, being an armed career criminal, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, false report to law enforcement and criminal trespass.
