Man, 89, walking in breakdown lane dies when struck by car driven by 16-year-old

BRIDGEWATER - An 89-year-old Bridgewater man walking in the breakdown lane of the Mayhew Turnpike was struck and killed by a 16-year-old driver on Monday.

The fatality occurred around 9:45 a.m. in Bridgewater.

Upon arrival, it was determined that a 2003 Subaru Legacy was traveling northbound when it entered the breakdown lane and struck the man. The identity of the driver of the Subaru is known to investigators but is being withheld at this time as the driver is 16 years old, according to a Dept. of Safety press release sent Monday..

The man killed was identified as Donald Estes, 89, of Bridgewater

Estes was pronounced deceased at the scene.

At the request of the Bridgewater Police Department, the Collision Analysis & Reconstruction (C.A.R.) Unit responded to the scene and assumed the lead of the investigation. The C.A.R. Unit was assisted on scene by New Hampshire State Police Troop F, the Bridgewater Fire Department and Bristol EMS.
