LEBANON, Maine - The Lebanon road department worker who succumbed to injuries on Saturday following a accident earlier this month died from "multiple pelvic and lower extremity fractures" suffered when he was struck by an excavator on June 15.
The York County Sheriff's Office made the details of the accident public today in a press release from Sheriff William King, who said they summoned to the area of 205 Shapleigh Road a report of a male who had been struck by an excavator.
According to King, David Goodwin, 41, of Lebanon, was working as a flagger and holding a sign directing traffic when the excavator hit his heel and he fell, injuring his pelvis and lower extremities.
Lebanon Fire and Rescue transported him to Portsmouth (NH) Regional Hospital.
While a statement from the town of Lebanon said Goodwin died on Sunday, the family said he passed away on Saturday around 4 p.m.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New Hampshire released the cause of Goodwin's death as complications from multiple pelvic and lower extremity fractures.
The York County Sheriff's Office will be coordinating the ongoing investigation with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, who are responsible for workplace-related deaths.
Town officials released a statement on Thursday but did not identify the victim.
."The Lebanon town staff and selectboard offer our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the person who died," the statement said. "This is a tragic event for everyone involved and for our community."
Town officials say they are fully cooperating with the investigation.
A Go Fund Me page started by the sister of Goodwin's fiance said he died after a "work related" accident and leaves behind five children, one of whom is just four months old.
Lebanon town officials and the Maine Department of Labor have refused further comment as the incident is now under investigation.
