ROCHESTER - John Joseph Hourihan, 73, died unexpectedly at his home in Rochester Aug. 7, 2023. The cause of death was COPD.
John was the fourth of five children born to Leo Sterling Hourihan and Jeannette Forcier. He grew up in Dover and attended both parochial and public schools there until he moved to Rhode Island in the late 60s and finished high school in Warwick, R.I.
After high school, John was drafted into the Army and trained to become an MP. After boot camp and training, he was stationed to Vietnam. He served his tour of 13 months and volunteered to serve an extended tour of several months enabling him to receive an immediate discharge returning stateside.
John, like thousands of other Viet vets, had a lifelong struggle, both physically and psychologically following his return home. He was eventually awarded a full disability for the ravages of the PTSD he suffered.
He was a loving brother and uncle to his four siblings and many nieces and nephews. John's siblings are Leo Sterling of Leyden, Mass; Thomas Francis of Newington; Ronald James of Greenfield, Mass; and Donna Hourihan Glidden of Manchester, Mass.
