ROCHESTER - A new program to charge city residents for overflow trash that was unanimously approved by the City Council in May will hit the streets next week.
Starting on Tuesday the City of Rochester transitions from the current trash bag sticker program to a pay-per bag system for any household trash that won't fit in a typical green residential toter.
The new program applies to trash brought directly to the Waste Management Residential Drop-Off location. It should be noted that residents whose trash fits entirely within their toters do not need to purchase the new city-approved trash bags.
Beginning Tuesday the 30-gallon trash bags will be available for purchase at both Market Baskets and Hannafords in Rochester. The bags will be sold in rolls of five for $9. The city's tax office will no longer be selling the trash bags.
For residents who have already purchased stickers under the current program, Waste Management will continue to honor them until the end of the year.
