ROCHESTER - Gemma L. Gilman of Rochester died on Dec. 30, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Aug. 13, 1925, in a small French speaking area of Rochester known as "Little Canada", Gonic. She was the daughter of Napolean and Laura (Fortier) Breton who had migrated here from Thetford Mines, Canada.
Gemma lived through many changes in society and challenges in life; always holding onto her enviable common sense and wisdom to tackle it all. She shared and encouraged us to uphold the highest possible standard for ourselves, our family and friends, and most importantly, our work.
She loved the mountains, the lakes and ocean, especially York Beach. We shared many precious memories at our beloved Nubble Lighthouse. She loved word games, puzzles and reading the daily newspaper and nothing stopped her from having her daily doughnut and coffee. Event shopping for beautiful clothes, and nice shoes with quality stitching was her forte....as a lifelong fancy stitcher. Gemma looked forward to lunch out on a regular basis, especially if it included lobster. Most of all she truly loved, enjoyed and prayed for her family every day with her rosary beads. We will miss her love, support and her beautiful smile, Every. Single. Day.
Gemma is predeceased by her loving husband Donald, daughter Sandy, her parents and her siblings Bret, Gert, Vi and Jackie. Survivors include her daughters Gemma (Joseph) Hardy, Donna (Jonathan) Hinch; grandchildren Derek Hardy, Todd (Christine) Hardy, Michelle (Douglas) Tatro, Katrina (Matthew) Gilman along with many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
