MILTON - Firefighters on Saturday battled a fast-moving fire on a remote Milton Road, and are still at the scene trying to put out hot spots and drench area woodlands to mitigate the potential for brush fires.

The fire at a two-story residence at 70 Mason Road was called in around 2:30 p.m. and went to a second alarm quickly, according to NorthEast Fire Alerts.

Three Alton firefighters pour water on the gutted first floor of a Milton home that was destroyed on Saturday afternoon.

More than 20 firetrucks and other emergency vehicles from Wolfeboro, Rochester, Farmington and Acton, Maine, navigated rutted portions of Teneriffe Mountain Road to get to the blaze.

About a dozen firefighters spent much of the time putting a hose and rake to woodlands to prevent a brush from igniting.

One firefighters noted that when the call came in there was a large concern that on a hot day in a dry month it could spell trouble.

Luckily, firefighters had a water source from local pond to ensure a steady water supply to battle the blaze.

Milton Fire Chief Nick Marique was on scene but as it was still an active scene could not comment.

The owner of the house was at the residence but had no comment.

While the blaze was still smoking, firefighters concentrated much of their effort on dousing the upstairs.

The location of where the fire began has not been released.
