Fairgrounds abuzz Wednesday as Granite State Fair readies for its second running

ROCHESTER - Fairgoers can expect a lot more farm animals including cute little piglets and other kid friendly petting opportunities when they visit the Second Annual Granite State fair that begins today at 4 p.m.
Fair organizer Mark Perry, back in his familiar spot behind the big desk in the fair's office, said the fair will also have several new rides, including a bunch more kiddie rides.
The fairgrounds were abuzz on Wednesday as Fiesta Shows employees, contract workers and volunteers were all busy getting the final touches ready for today's grand opening at 4 p.m. when longtime fair ambassador Joel Sherburne will arrive via police escort to officially open the newly branded Granite State Fair.

Food, game and ride venues were well on their way to completion Wednesday afternoon.


The fair, formerly called the Rochester Fair, first began its September run in 1874. It was renamed the Granite State fair last year as organizers sought to increase its geographical reach.
The fair will run Thursday though Sunday this week and next.
Tonight's and Friday's grandstand show will feature Motocross, which will include motorcycle stunt riders performing feats of derring-do.
The fair and midway open at 4 p.m. today and Friday.
On weekends, the fair opens at 10 a.m., with the midway open at noon.
