ACTON, Maine - The man whose vehicle was being chased by Milton Police into Acton on Monday was a former Rochester, N.H., man who was a fugitive from justice.
Michael D. Bennett, 31, now of Sanbornville, N.H., was wanted on a probation violation, stemming from a conviction of reckless conduct with a deadly weapon.
Milton Police got involved around 9 p.m. after getting a report of suspicious activity by a man in a vehicle in the parking lot of Dollar General on White Mountain Highway. Bennett fled the scene as officers approached him.
He then sped toward Townhouse Road at speeds up to 80 mph before officers were able to deploy spike strips on Townhouse Road to deflate two of the tires.
Bennett then continued north at slower speeds on Route 125 and into Acton.
The York County Sheriff's Office said that at about 9:15 p.m., the slow chase ended on Foxes Ridge Road where several local residents came out of their homes and tried to form a roadblock to stop Bennett.
Some Acton community members "exited their residences and tried to assist the New Hampshire authorities by forming a roadblock," according to a press release from York County Sheriff Bill King.
During the brief standoff an Acton man allegedly fired a shotgun at Bennett's vehicle hitting the trunk.
Robert Sprague, 55, of Acton, was arrested for reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon. He was transported to jail where he posted a $2,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear at the York Judicial Center next month.
Meanwhile, Bennett is now facing multiple new charges, including disobeying an officer, reckless operation, misuse of plates, and being charged as a habitual offender. He will be held pending further legal action.
