ROCHESTER - If you are looking for an affordable health insurance plan, Health Market Connect is at the Library on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to I pm. Come and find out what could work for you.
Art DisplaySpaulding Art Teacher, Marissa Chapman, has this to say about her students' work: "The artwork displayed from Spaulding High School show at the library has pieces from freshmen to seniors. The show also includes work from a wide range of classes, from Art One, Art Two, Art Three Honors, Advanced Placement Art, Painting and Drawing, and Ceramics. It shows no matter the age or class, Spaulding has incredibly talented art students, and we are proud to display such great pieces of art."
Health Market Connect
Health Market Connect will be conducting weekly workshops in the Community Room on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. -1 p.m. (through May 25th). HMC employees will be here during those times to meet with and assist local residents in finding and enrolling in affordable (or sometimes free) insurance plans available to them. They do not charge for their services, or (and legally cannot) favor one plan or insurance company over another, nor do they earn a commission. They are 100% funded through their grant to provide these services to New Hampshire residents.
The Library Children's Room will be highlighting our staff over the next few weeks. This week we are featuring Christina |
We are happy to be hosting Black Bear Happenings on Wednesday, May 18th, at 6:00 pm in the Community Room. This program covers a brief history of wildlife in NH, the Sport Fish Restoration Program, black bear natural history, research, and management in NH. Black Bear Happenings is a presentation of the NH Fish & Game Dept. It will be presented by Doug Whitfield and Dennis Walsh who are both Wildlife Stewards with NH Fish & Game. It covers the life cycle of Black Bears, their habitat needs, and ways to avoid potentially costly conflict with humans.

Hoopla Recommendation
Speaking of downloadable resources, Main Desk Librarian, Stephanie, says: "I have become such a big fan of hoopla. I listen whenever I am involved doing household chores or on the computer. You can listen on your phone, which is very convenient, and can even download content there so you can listen in the car, great for those of us who don't have CD players in our cars anymore. I am completely addicted to thrillers and have listened to some great ones. And the great thing about hoopla is there's no waiting for their titles! You can listen instantly!
Most recently I listed to the Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf. It kept me glued to the action as the narrator became all the characters telling the story of a true crime writer, Wylie Lark, who is staying in an abandoned farmhouse that was once the scene of a murder. An old dog has adopted her and keeps her company. It is winter and there's a big storm coming. She lets the dog out and when it doesn't come back, she goes to check for it and finds a child in the snow, more dead than alive. This is the beginning of a fascinating story that goes back and forth between something that happens in the past and the present situation Wylie finds herself in. I highly recommended this title!
Children's room
Meet Our Staff:
The Children's Room has returned to normal services and as a way to help introduce their talented staff to new and returning patrons they have been highlighting them in mini-bios we have been sharing in this column over the last few weeks.
This week we are featuring: Christina! Christina has been working in the Children's Room a little over seven years where she started as a Library Assistant. She recently moved to her new role, Lead Children's Librarian. Christina came to us after many years of providing in-home childcare. Prior to that she worked in education at both the preschool and elementary levels. Christina strives to create a welcoming space where our community can connect while fostering early literacy and inspiring the library's youngest patrons to explore and discover through art and play. She is certain that you are never too old to play with Lego and that it's ok to occasionally eat chocolate for dinner! #childrenslibrary #playatthelibrary #rochesternh

Children's Book Bags: Have you seen the Children's Book Bags on sale in the Children's Room? Money from the sale of the book bags goes the Friends of the Library, who use it to support their purchase of the museum passes we offer.
Book Recommendation: Ophie's Ghosts by Justina Ireland. This middle grade chapter book starts out in the segregated south in 1922. Tragedy strikes the lives of Ophie and her mother so they move to Pittsburgh where they discover that racism comes in many forms. Ophie then starts seeing ghosts and she struggles to figure out how to protect herself and help the ghosts at the same time. This book contains strong language, murder, and historical references and language. It is a historical piece as well as a fantasy/mystery.
