'Comics in World History and Culture' talk set for Wednesday

ROCHESTER - We are very excited for our Friends of the Rochester Public Library Humanities program Comics in World History and Cultures presented by cartoonist Marek Bennett. Heads up: It will take place at Jetpack Comics, NOT the Library! Also, check out the cool new virtual upcoming program.

Goodbyes

Recently we have had to say goodbye to our two long time pages. Henri left us in July to take another job and prepare for his upcoming semester at UNH. Miranda has taken a full time position and is leaving us shortly. They were both part of the RPL family and we will miss their dedication and their presence here as will many of our patrons who have seen them working the different floors and shelving our various collections. We all wish them the best in their futures!

Contacting Patrons for Library Holds

If you signed up for email notifications for your holds for library items you will no longer be receiving an additional phone call unless you specifically request it. We know people are busy and we don't want to add to your day with extra phone messages. Patrons who only want to be notified with a phone call will continue to receive our calls and messages. We are always happy to talk to you and let you know when your items are ready for you!

Comics in World History and Culture Event

Wednesday, August 18th at 6:30 p.m. Presented by the Rochester Friends of the Library this Humanities program is free and open to the public. Registration is required, please call 603-332-1428 ext 2 to register.

Teacher and cartoonist Marek Bennett explores the relationship of comics from ancient and medieval European history, ancient Mayan culture and mathematics, modern Japanese history, local US history and more and how it pertains to the modern reader. Seacoast NH LGBT History Project Display

The Library is excited to host a Seacoast LGBT History Project exhibit through the month of August. The exhibit which chronicles the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people in the Seacoast area and will be on display in the Carnegie Gallery. The Seacoast LGBT History Project was founded in 2015 by Tom Kaufhold to research, document and preserve the history of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people on the Seacoast with an emphasis on Portsmouth.

Virtual Program, August 25^th at 6pm:

When outdoors writer Dan Szczesny and his daughter Uma hiked out to the famous landmark boulder that looks remarkably like a frog, his six-year-old asked if there were other rocks in the state that were famous as well. Turns out, there's a lot! And so began a state-wide adventure to visit, document and learn about one of the state's most famous features, thousands of rocks and boulders. Dan will be chatting with us about his new book, NH Rocks That Rock: an Adventure Guide to Twenty-Five Famous Boulders of the Granite State, along with his journey in writing it.

Children's Room

Good news for our enthusiastic readers!I Kids can continue to sign onto their Beanstack for Children's Tails & Tales until Friday, September 10 so they can keep logging their reading and earning their goal prize. Drop-in Story Times: We will offer drop-in story times geared for children age 2 through 6, but all families are welcome! Bring a blanket and meet on the lawn.

Friends of the Library Book Club

The 2nd Monday of the month at 1:00 p.m. in the Biography Room on the Main Floor of the Library. Books are available to pick up at the Main Desk. Email RPLBookGroup@gmail.com with any questions. The next meeting will be on September 15 the title we will be discussing is Where You'll Find Me by Ty Gagne and the October 12th title is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

Book Review

Main Desk Librarian, Amy, shares a favorite recent book that she's enjoyed:

"I just finished another extremely satisfying book by V.E. Schwab, who also wrote the Shades of magic series, which I also LOVE. The invisible life of Addie LaRue is a story is about a girl in 18th century France who has no interest in following the current cultural norms of marrying so she makes a deal to be free of it all but ends up being cursed and forgotten by everyone she meets instead. The story follows her for 300 years and all the choices she has to make. Another character comes into play, but I won't give out much more except to say that I rooted for Addie and her will to not just survive, but stubbornly live her way. It was beautiful and cleverly written. I enjoyed the twists and turns of Addie's journey through time with history, art, and music woven throughout. I am convinced now that V.E. Schwab can do no wrong."

Teens

Young Adult Librarian, Donna, gives a big shout out to all the teens who participated in this year's Summer Reading Program. It was great to see all the Reading Logs turned in and to see the enthusiastic response to reading during the summer. Also a big thank you to the Teen SRP sponsors for their prize donations: JetPack Comics, Golick's Dairy Bar, Michael Charles Music, Skele-Tones, the Boston Red Sox and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. We appreciate their support in helping to encourage teen reading.

The Rochester Public Library is open for browsing without needing an appointment. We are open Mon-Wed 9:00-8:00, Thur.-Fri 9:00-5:00.

Returns

Returned items are no longer quarantined. You can continue to put your returned books and magazines in the drive-up drop box and DVDS and audiobooks in the drop box next to the building by the Children's Room entrance. You may also bring your returns inside and place them in the Main Desk and Children's drop slots if you are here to browse.
