City's $9M Strafford Square roundabout expected to be operational today

ROCHESTER - The city's DPW announced on Thursday its planned phased opening of the new $9 million roundabout at Strafford Square.

Weather permitting, striping of the roundabout was scheduled to take place on Friday after which full traffic operation will be in effect, a press release from the city noted on Thursday.

While the final street lights surrounding the roundabout are not yet ready for operation, Public Works will deploy temporary light towers to ensure the safety and visibility of motorists and pedestrians during the evening hours.

Single-lane crosswalks will be open for pedestrians to use immediately, allowing for safe passage. However, double-lane crosswalks on North Main Street will not be available initially as the rapid flashing beacons are not yet operational.

The permanent speed table for the North Main Street slip lane will be constructed at a later date. A temporary rubber speed table and barrels will be deployed for the interim.

The original estimate on the roundabout's construction was around $6 million, but an additional $3 millions provided through bonding in July 2022.

A presentation on how to navigate a roundabout was provided at the September Public Works Committee. Hard copy literature is available in the main lobby of City Hall. The City of Rochester appreciates the patience, understanding, and cooperation of its residents and visitors as it works toward the completion of this infrastructure project.
