ROCHESTER - A Rochester man has been indicted in an October bank robbery at the Bank of New Hampshire branch on North Main Street.
Bart Augustus, 45, formerly of 78 Partridge Green Apartments, was indicted on felony robbery, felony theft by unauthorized taking and felony falsification of evidence in connection with the case.
Police accounts and court documents allege that on Oct. 22 Augustus walked into the bank wearing a woman's dress and nylons over his head, handed a teller a note demanding cash and fled with about $2,300, which he later said he spent mostly on crack cocaine.
The following Monday he reportedly left a note at the bank saying he was sorry for his actions and later that morning confessed to his probation officer. He was arrested later in the day.
Augustus never showed or indicated he had a weapon during the heist.
Augustus' bail was set at $10,000 cash and he continues to be held at Strafford County Jail.
The falsification of physical evidence charge is for allegedly discarding or hiding clothes he had worn during the alleged robbery.
The maximum prison term if convicted on all three counts is 29 years.
The Strafford County grand jury indictments were handed down Jan. 15 and released today.
An indictment is not an indication of guilt, only that enough evidence has been presented to warrant a trial.
