MILTON - The New Milton China Pond opened back up earlier this year several years after closing their older version next to Cumberland Farms in downtown Milton.
Owner Mike Nie said he's happy to be back serving up tasty Chinese fare again after taking a hiatus from the eatery while working to refurbish the former Ray's Marina into a venue that now boasts three eateries.
China Pond has always been a go-to place for a good meal at a great price and that has not changed.
Living in these times of inflationary pressure, Nie has managed to continue his tradition of keeping prices down for frugal Granite Staters and Mainers.
Nothing proves that more than his luncheon specials that go for just $9.95.
There are eight of them to choose from so there's got to be one for you.
I chose the chicken with broccoli, which was very tender and juicy. The broccoli was steamed to perfection and came out a beautiful green, crisp and flavorful in a savory broth thickened with corn starch.
I also got an appetizer with this special, two skewered chicken teriyaki pieces. And as they say, that's not all. I also got my choice of fried or white rice. I got the fried rice, which came with chunks of pork.
Most customers get their lunch to go, but I ate at a table that overlooks the North Coast Railroad train tracks and scenic Milton Three Ponds.
I've been to all three eateries multiple times and - despite being a former Amtrak Pullman porter and a lifelong rail buff - remain rebuffed by the lack of a passing train to watch go thundering by.
But I wasn't rebuffed by a bad lunch. When I got home I still had near a half pound of food to enjoy tomorrow with the soy sauce, spicy mustard and duck sauce all still in place.
Could easily become a weekly sojourn.
The New China Pond is located at 584 White Mountain Hwy. at the north end of the building.
