LEBANON - Carl W. Downs, 90, went home to be with his Lord on March 25, 2014, following a lengthy time of failing health.
Carl was born October 11, 1923 the son of Frank P. and Edna (Johnson) Downs.
He was a graduate of the Lebanon Academy in West Lebanon, Maine in 1940. Carl spent his younger years working in the timber/lumber business with his father. On March 27, 1942 he married the love of his life, Evelyn M. Wallingford. In 1943 Carl proudly served his country in the Army Airforce as a truck operator hauling supplies in the 873 Chemical Co. in Normandy-Northern France-Rhineland-Italy and Central Europe during World War II. Upon his return home he continued to work with his father, then as a leadman at Prime Tanning in Berwick, Maine, at Great Falls Bleachery in Somersworth, and retired from Thompson Center Arms in Rochester, as a supervisor in the gun stock dept.
In his retirement years Carl enjoyed wintering in Fla. with Evelyn. He loved spending time with family and friends, watching the news, waiting impatiently for the Foster’s each morning and reading his Bible. Carl was a member of the Union Freewill Baptist Church in West Lebanon, Maine.
Carl is survived by his wife of 72 years, Evelyn; his beloved dog, Sam; son Paul Downs and wife Peggy of Farmington, daughter Rebecca Curtis and her husband Don of Clayton Lake, Maine, daughter Rose Davis and her husband Raymond of Lebanon, ME, son Wayne Downs and wife Vicky of Lebanon, ME and grandson Anthony Downs and wife Mary of Westfield, Pa., also several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
