WEST LEBANON, Maine - The remains discovered last week in a wooded area near 340 TM Wentworth Road have been identified as Dale Godfrey, 55, of West Lebanon, who was last seen on April 26, 2017, after leaving his residence on Sam Wentworth Road in Lebanon following a domestic violence incident, state police said today.
The discovery was made by the property owner while preparing to cut a wood lot. A wallet with Godfrey's identification was discovered in close proximity of the remains, and clothing items at the scene matched the clothing description provided when he went missing.
The Medical Examiner's Office did not release the cause and manner of Godfrey's death.
Maine State Police spent the day on Thursday digging with shovels and other tools in the area of where the investigation took place about 100 yards south of the roadway.
The location where they were set up on Thursday is about a half mile from where Godfrey left his pickup truck after the domestic violence incident.
Police said they found a lot of blood in the truck at the time of its discovery and that Godfrey was known to carry box cutters in his truck.
Godfrey was last seen on April 26 around 4 a.m. after police say he got into a confrontation with his wife and began strangling her before fleeing in his truck.
While still missing Godfrey was indicted by a York County grand jury.
State Police Trooper Kyle Wells, who handled the case in its early stages, said that the indictment was made due to time constraints in the prosecution of the case. He said it became both a criminal and missing persons case.
Police have theorized all along that Godfrey may have succumbed to self-inflicted wounds and that his body was either in the woods near where his truck was found or somewhere in Milton Three Ponds.
Police on Thursday took the remains to the state Medical Examiner's Office to determine the cause of death and identify the body.
