MILTON - Construction workers framing the roof of Milton's new fire station on Thursday probably would've welcomed a hosing down by firefighters, but instead relied on a bucket brigade, as in buckets of bottled water to keep them hydrated in heat index temperatures that climbed above 100 degrees.
"It's at least 100 degrees on the roof," said Chip Eliot, foreman of a nine-man crew from Eckman Construction working on the building now in its 15th week of construction.
With the temperature over 100 and some of the worst humidity of the summer it's likely it felt like 110 on the roof, but Eliot said his crew took advantage of constant hydration to keep them safe.
Eliot pointed to two 70-gallon water coolers full of bottled water nearby that workers were urged to use through the day.
He said work started around 7 a.m. and the crew was being released early due to the heat, something they were very appreciative of.
He added that when summer construction began workers were having more difficulty with the heat, one actually becoming sick, but that over the weeks and months working in warm weather, many had now become better acclimated.
