Applause for two selectmen, advice for the third

It really is a shame Lebanon still has no program in place to videotape government meetings.

Because if the cameras had been rolling at Tuesday’s selectmen’s meeting the folks at home would’ve seen something you rarely see among today’s jaded constituencies: spontaneous applause from a filled Town Offices audience for a Board of Selectmen’s work.

Along with a new treasurer, a team of selectmen appears to be in place to turn the page to a new, improved Lebanon.

It’s sure to be a work in progress, but some progress is better than no progress at all.

About 15 years ago this writer was elected to the MSAD 60 School Board, and served on it for several months. At the time I worked at the Lowell Sun newspaper.

Then a better job offer at a newspaper in Claremont, N.H., came along.

Because my schedule and position no longer allowed me to make the school board meetings, I regretfully had to give up my post.

It was the only right thing to do.

It still is.

Selectmen Cole wasn’t at Tuesday’s meeting. In fact, Selectman Cole has missed all but a handful of meetings in several months as this newspaper has already chronicled.

Since he is unable to attend selectmen’s meetings, it might be best for the town if he were to step down so someone who can attend can fill the void that now exists.
